As we head into the new year, you might consider several personal or professional resolutions. Make sure you include your marketing campaign, because an updated strategy will help your company remain relevant to your target audience.

Review your current email marketing methods, and make sure you’ve incorporated these seven “must-haves”.

1. A Defined Strategy

Ask yourself what you want to accomplish, and then design your strategy around those goals. Do you want to:

  • Generate more leads
  • Create sales opportunities
  • Encourage customer loyalty
  • Demonstrate thought leadership
  • … something else?

You should know what exactly you want to accomplish, so that you can analyze your results and continue to tweak your strategy.

2. A Targeted Audience

Segment your email list by various demographics (industry, geographic location, and so on). Now you can send more personalized emails based on the interests of your contacts, and increase conversion rates.

3. Valuable Content

Why do your contacts want to open and read your emails? Make sure your content sparks interest or provides value.

4. Accurate Content

Your content should be not only interesting and valuable, but accurate and concisely presented. Double check all content for relevance and legality, and proofread carefully for a flawless presentation.

5. An Optimized Format

Your emails should present well on any device. Double check to be certain your emails are formatted to work on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers.

6. An Integrated Pathway

Your emails should serve as the opening of a conversation. Make sure you include at least one link for your contacts to find out more about your products and services, or about your company in general.

7. Clean Data

Customer relationship management tools only perform optimally if they contain accurate data. Review your records regularly so that your tools work the way they should.
